Is HD FM radio worth it?

Post by kharyptho84 » Sat Jan 16, 2021 9:16 am

How well is HD radio vs. regular analog? Thinking of getting an HD compatible HU soon. I don't listen to the radio unless there are talk shows. Wondering if it would justify an upgrade from my SR80BT.

I LOVE HD Radio. The clarity is outstanding, especially in areas where the signal is strong, but there can be occasional interference. For example, Seattle was a horrible reception radio market, but I drove from the North 'burbs all the way to Olympia (a good 80 miles) without a single flicker of's as if you're listening to a CD. And HD-2/3 sub-channels often carry the low power FM's that won't travel as far, but they will come in perfect as long as the signal is solid enough to keep the HD-1 channel locked in. 2020/Covid probably slowed the growth of broadcasters putting up the cash to convert to HD, but yeah, the sound is much better than analog and Sirius xm, at least in my car. I won't own another car radio without HD built in.

It sounds significantly better than analog. The only thing is it takes 4 or 5 seconds for an HD station to start playing after you tune to the station, whereas the analog stations play immediately. At least in my car (brand new 2021 Kia SUV) that's how it is.

Kind of like with my digital cable box, it takes a couple of seconds for a channel to "start playing" after I change to that channel, whereas with old 80s/90s analog cable the channel played immediately and "channel surfing" was much easier.

I think if they have different content than the other platforms now like, spotify, apple music, youtubemusic and etc., I think they will still be worth hearing. Especially if they have a jolly DJ and energetic content to brighten up the traffic. Cincinnati Sign Company

Absolutely love it. I've had it in my car and at home for about 14 years. I won't buy any car without it.
